The Exception Argument

Abortion only ends about 25% of pregnancies and abuse only destroys about 25% of marriages. Both are exceptions, not the norm. This justification, however, is only used to remain silent on the issue of abuse.

To be consistent, either the church needs to stop exposing the sin of abortion and continue to reject God’s Word or start exposing the sin of abuse and obey God’s Word fully. When hypocrisy reigns, the message the church sends women is that God is confusing and unjust – it’s not okay to hurt your children, but it’s okay for others to hurt you.

God commands the church to expose sin out of love for God, neighbors, and the gospel. He doesn’t disregard exceptions. He came for them. He was an exile on the earth. He came to reach the vulnerable, the hated, the unaccepted, the neglected, and the outcast.

He went out of His way to meet the woman at the well. He acknowledged her. He rescued her. He encouraged her. He gave her life. He chose her.

The Savior commands us also to rescue the weak and to open our mouths for them. The exception is not a place for God’s people to avoid. It’s exactly where we’re supposed to be.

Give justice to the weak and the fatherless; maintain the right of the afflicted and the destitute. Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. – Psalm 82:3-4

Open your mouth for the mute, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy. – Proverbs 31:8-10

Rescue those who are being taken away to death; hold back those who are stumbling to the slaughter. – Proverbs 24:11

Take no part in the unfruitful works of darkness, but instead expose them. For it is shameful even to speak of the things that they do in secret. – Ephesians 5:11-12
