Portland, Oregon intended to help those lost in the depths of addiction. The goal was to make drugs safer by legalizing them and transferring the funds formerly used for criminalization to provide more aid and rehab options to users, but it didn’t go to plan. Instead of increasing rehabilitation numbers, it destroyed a city.
It’s easy to blow this off as another “keep Portland weird” mishap, but it is a clear demonstration of God’s truth and a forewarning to this nation and the world. God’s Word says there is a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death (Proverbs 14:12). When people make up in their own minds regarding the best way to help people and their methods don’t line up with God’s Word, the help doesn’t help. It destroys.
Just as these methods to help drug users devastated a city, decriminalizing abortion and trying to make abortion safer will destroy a nation.
Decriminalizing drugs began with incremental changes, like legalizing marijuana, which is widely known to be a gateway drug leading to a life of addiction. Once it became accessible, more and more people who would have been deterred by the former law began using it and going down that reckless road. Drug propaganda also continues to draw more and more empathy for drug users, framing them as victims rather than people who are accountable for their choices.
Likewise, the incremental step of promoting and dispensing cheap birth control as a solution only lowered inhibitions while its failure rate led millions of parents to unexpected pregnancies. The abortion industry focusing on exceptions, such as rape and poverty, to draw empathy and victimize mothers in the beginning opened a floodgate to the other 98% who would go on to kill over 66 million children out of fear and convenience.
Supporting and victimizing drug users and parents choosing abortion on the surface seems charitable, but it actually allows and encourages drug dealers and the abortion industry to grow profit and expand their evil, destroying the next generation.
God loves justice. Striving toward righteousness exalts a nation. On the other hand, nations set out to make destruction God hates legal, accessible, and safe may seem to improve for a season, but they will never thrive. They will only kindle His anger.
Drug addiction and abortion both lead down the path to self-destruction, destroying individuals, families, and communities. It’s actually not loving, but hateful to give in to their destructive desires by providing easy access to temporary comfort and enabling so many struggling people down a dark path.
Sometimes, loving people looks like establishing laws to protect them from themselves, protection looks like lawful guidance toward birth or rehab, and deliverance looks like an unexpected child or jail time.
Jesus sits at the right hand of the throne of God having been given all rule and authority. His will prevails. He makes promises in His Word to bring blessing to those who obey Him. He also makes promises to the wicked who continually reject His ways. All of His promises come true.
The destruction this nation has witnessed in its cities and communities is but a sliver of what’s to come if God’s people refuse to humble themselves, seek the Lord, and turn from compromising exceptions and legalized innocent bloodshed.
It’s time for abortion to be treated as what it is, not a controversial social issue, but a crime against humanity, a grave injustice, and a sin against God Himself.
Tell the Truth.
Abolish Abortion.
The house of the wicked will be destroyed,
but the tent of the upright will flourish.
There is a way that seems right to a man,
but its end is the way to death.
Proverbs 14:11-12
Righteousness exalts a nation, but sin is a reproach to any people.
Proverbs 14:34
Because the sentence against an evil deed is not executed speedily, the heart of the children of man is fully set to do evil.
Ecclesiastes 8:11
Woe to those who decree iniquitous decrees, and the writers who keep writing oppression, to turn aside the needy from justice and to rob the poor of my people of their right, that widows may be their spoil, and that they may make the fatherless their prey! What will you do on the day of punishment, in the ruin that will come from afar? To whom will you flee for help, and where will you leave your wealth? Nothing remains but to crouch among the prisoners or fall among the slain. For all this his anger has not turned away, and his hand is stretched out still.
Isaiah 10:1-4
