“Stop saying strangulation is a ‘red flag’ and start saying strangulation is ‘attempted murder.’ Strangulation is not a ‘sign’ that a perpetrator will murder. The perpetrator attempted murder. Change the conversation and stop diminishing violence. Hold perpetrators accountable.” – Paula Goodwin, defendsurvivors.org
It’s spiritual warfare month. The devil has done a great job at minimizing and distorting labels of things God hates, so in return churches minimize their treatment of these sins and disguise their apathy by calling it grace and love.
When coercive control and violence are called marital conflict and abuse is treated like a moral failure in need of rehab instead of just consequences, what is really happening underneath it all is the devil’s main purpose of hindering the gospel for all involved.
Eternal hope only comes in the proclamation of the truth, not only in what Christ did on the cross, but also in the knowledge of sin. When sin is given a pass, both the path of justice and healing for the victim and the path of repentance for the perpetrator are hindered.
Judgment begins at the household of God. The church needs to change, so the devil will stop winning inside the church at a war he already lost.
For he says, “In a favorable time I listened to you, and in a day of salvation I have helped you.” Behold, now is the favorable time; behold, now is the day of salvation. We put no obstacle in anyone’s way, so that no fault may be found with our ministry. – 2 Corinthians 6:2-3
Like a muddied spring or a polluted fountain is a righteous man who gives way before the wicked. – Proverbs 25:26
Rescue the weak and the needy; deliver them from the hand of the wicked. – Psalm 82:4
